Annie Wendelin’s house

Annie Wendelin’s house

According to the fire insurance policy, the house was built in 1830 by the goldsmith Henrik Gottfried Starcke, who had owned the property since 1823 (deed according to Lasse Backlund). The following year, however, Henrik’s son Gustaf took over the lot but did not live there himself. The fisherman Hans Ström and his wife Catharina did. Gustaf Starcke, the bailiff and crown bailiff, lived in house number 165 (Kyrkogatan 1B), which he had done since 1821 (in 1823 he bought that lot and half of the neighbouring lot, number 154 towards Västra Långgatan).

In 1835 Gustaf also bought the other half of lot 154 from the bankruptcy estate of shoemaker Anders Tillberg. Tillberg’s son-in-law Michael Ekblom, who lived on the half of lot 154 facing Västra Långgatan, took over lot 151, i.e. this house, from Gustaf Starcke instead (but died two years later). Starcke thus exchanged houses with Ekblom/Tillberg. The house remained in the Ekblom family for 30 years, until Michael and Maria Ekblom’s son’s heirs sold the house to master painter Lindqvist, who also owned the neighbouring lot number 150.

From the 1860s, lot 151 and the neighbouring lot to the south, number 150, have from time to time had the same owner.

Otto Wendelin, a clerk, took over both lots 1908, but soon left them to his wife Annie (née Åkerberg). Annie lived to 94 years old and died in 1970. A period of more than 60 years with Annie Wendelin in the house came to an end. After her death, her heirs rented the house to the unregistered art organisation Spectra. The organisation bought the house in 1978 and began to renovate it. With support from various sources, the group’s own financial contribution, and the generous help and professionalism of energy consultant Unto Fieandt, a successful renovation was achieved that respected the old architecture. The renovation was completed in the 1980s. Read more about how this was done in the history of the Spectra art association in swedish on the swedish version of this page (that also contains more information than this translation does).

Since the renovation, the building has been used extensively for courses, work and exhibitions. Gallery Spectra has hosted many outstanding exhibitions, most notably the Fritz Jakobsson exhibition. Today, Spectra is an active association that offers its members working space and exhibition opportunities.

Wijkbergs gård

Wijkbergs gård

Captain Christian August Olin bought the house in 1876, it was built in 1862.
On his way from North America to Europe in 1880, the ship Christinestad disappeared without a
trace. Captain Olin and his crew of 13 sailors also disappeared with her. Captain Olin was
46 years old.
He left behind a wife and three children, two of them died the following year.
The family of Captain Olin and the Wijkbergs lived in the house until 1995.
The house is still in private use.

Building history

It is quite possible that the house and outbuilding previously located on the property were damaged in the Great Fire of Kristinestad 1859. The present residential building was built
in 1862. It is a short-cornered log building with a grooved horizontal timber frame and a pitched roof. The window frames are original, only some of the glass has been replaced. The house has
a vaulted brick cellar, which is quite rare in the old houses of Kristinestad.
Before the current concrete tile roof, the house had a wooden roof and probably later a felt roof.
On the property there is a log outbuilding built in 1859. In the building was a barn for 3-4 cows, a stable, an outhouse, a salt cellar and other storage facilities.
There was a baker’s cottage built in 1850, which may also have been used as a dwelling. The building was demolished in the 1990s due to its very bad condition.

Driver Jernvall’s house

The first part of this house on Västra Långgatan was built in 1858 by carpenter and joiner Johan Sundblad.

In 1859, on 17th of September, the magistrate in Kristinestad issued Johan with a plot letter for plot number 194. The plot is located in the new neighbourhood created in 1844. Johan Sundblad then got full ownership of the plot (source Lasse Backlund).

The plot no 194 in the first block originally stretched from Rehnbäcksgatan in the south to Sundströmsgatan in the north, but has in practice been divided into a southern and northern half at least since 1860 when Abraham Lagerstam built a house at the southern end of the plot.

Buildin history

According to the fire insurance certificate issued in 1871 to the sailor Karl Wilhelm Sundbland the following buildings were on the plot in 1873 (the buildings are numbered as on the map below).

  1. Residential house of timber in good condition built in 1858, neither lined nor painted, under a roof of boards. 21 cubits long, 10 cubits wide and 10 3/4 cubits high from the ground to the roof ridge. One storey with five living rooms, together with a vestibule and staircase, containing four tiled stoves and a kitchen stove and oven.
  2. A timber and board outbuilding in good condition built in 1868 and painted with red colour under a board roof. 10 cubits long, 5 cubits wide and 4 cubits high. Contains a cattle shed

There is a garden on the plot but no deciduous trees.

Skipper Lagerstam’s house

Skipper Lagerstam’s house

According to an insurance certificate dated 17 July 1849, the house was owned by the skipper Abraham. Lagerstam, who built it in 1844. According to this document, the main building consists of two parts, the wing facing Västra Långgatan was built of new timber, while the wing facing Kattpiskargränden consists of a newly erected older log frame.
The main building was entirely board-lined (probably with horizontal planed panels as it is specifically mentioned that it was painted with GREEN oil paint, and oil paint adheres best to planed wood).
The layout of the house corresponds to the current one, while the facade was modernised in the Art Nouveau style sometime in the 1910s and 1920s. The layout included 8 rooms: 1 hall, 5 chambers, 1 vestibule and 1 kitchen with a total of 6 tiled stoves (2 of which were oil-painted) and 1 kitchen stove with oven (2 rooms with oil-painted wallpaper and 6 with water-coloured wallpaper).

Skipper Häggblad’s house

Skipper Häggblad’s house

In 1845, skipper Anders Henrik Häggblad moved from Kaskinen to this plot. According to the fire insurance certificate, he built his house, which was originally plastered and painted white, on this plot in 1846.
According to a story, the house was transported here by sea from Kaskinen. Probably skipper Häggblad himself brought his house (or some other house) from Kaskinen when he moved. On the way the transport encountered a thunderstorm and parts of the house, two rooms, were lost. This is said to have happened in 1867 (while the house according to the insurance is older, but the year can be wrong in the letters and in stories). This was told to the current owner (2023) by Captain Ståhle in the summer of 1969. Her husband (father?) had been on the journey.

Bergelin’s house

Bergelin’s house

Plot number 48 in the first block of Kristinestad originally extended to Lillgränd, now known as Kattpiskargränd. The street side of this house was built in 1820 and is the oldest house on plot 48 and was perhaps built by the sailor Erik Lindbom and his wife Maria. The house has a 60 cm high stone base that is now completely below the street level. The house was owned by Johanna Bergelin’s family from 1871 to 1954, for 83 years.

The plot has effectively been divided into two parts since about 1840, and is now divided into properties 122-13 and 122-12, Västra Långgatan 26 A and B.

Building history

According to the insurance policy dated 1st of December 1861, the plot (the southern half of plot 48) was owned by the skipper’s widow Catarina Lovisa Röösgren.

The buildings are numbered according to the plan drawing furhter below:

  1. The street facing part is according to this insurance policy built of pine and spruce timber in 1820, the outer walls are not board lined but painted with dark red water colour. The size of the house is 13 x 8 m on a 60 cm high stone base and under a boarded roof, comprising a hall, two bedrooms and a tambour with a total of three tiled stoves. All the rooms had water-coloured wallpaper.
  2. Furthermore, according to this insurance certificate, the eastern wing was built as a separate part of spruce timber in 1853 and was neither boarded nor painted and consisted of five rooms: 2 vestibules, 1 bedroom, 1 kitchen and a so-called “fruit room”, with a total of 1 tiled stove and a kitchen stove with baking oven. The size of the house is 10×6 m under a boarded roof and with 3 windows of 1.05 x 90cm + 1 larger attic window, these windows in the courtyard wing can be compared with the 6 windows of the street building, which were 1.50 x 1.20 m in size.
  3. In addition to a lush garden and a well in the centre of the plot boundary to the north, there was an outbuilding in the northeast corner built partly of timber and partly of cross-laminated timber in 1850 and neither boarded nor painted: comprising a shack with a vestibule, feed barn and manure shed – the size was 12 x 5 m and with an average height of 4.5 m, which corresponds to the size of the current building.
  4. In 1876, master mason Granberg built a household shed west of the northern end of the outbuilding, which no longer exists.

Owner of whole plot nr 48 in the plan of year1825 (or plot 16 in 1750’s plan, or farm 22 in the plan 1772-1825).

1820-1825
The sailor Erik Lindbom with his wife Maria and the county clerk’s widow Sanberg lived on plot 22 according to the town plan of 1772 (there is no map showing the 1772 plan as far as we know). According to the fire insurance letter the house by the street existed on the southern half of the plot. Perhaps there was some other residential building as well.

1830-1835
The plot is given number 48 in the plan from 1825 and is still the same size. According to the census, the sailor Erik Lindbom and his wife Maria and the county clerk’s widow Caisa Sandberg lived on the plot.

Owners of the southern half of plot nr 48

1840-1845
In 1840, the plot is divided into two halves, with sailor Johan Hållfast and his wife Sofia occupying the second (southern) half, according to the land register. The Hållfast couple are thus the first people we know who lived in this particular house.

1850
