Emil Axelin was born in Kristinestad on May 19, 1864 and he was the son of Otto Wilhelm Axelin, who was born in Bötom in 1827 and who died in Kristinestad in 1865, when Emil was only one year old. Emil’s mother Maria Lovisa (1829-1896) was born in Hämeenlinna. Maria Lovisa was the daughter of Emanuel Carlström (1797-1833) and Maria Eleonora (b.1796). Maria Eleonora had had an illegitimate son Carl Emil Carlström (1818-1889) before she married Axelin. C. E. Carlström then became one of the major businessmen in Kristinestad and who later became the father of the commercial council Alfred Carlström. Emil Axelin was thus a half-cousin of the commercial councilor Alfred Carlström.
Emil started his business career with his uncle Carl Emil Carlström as a sales clerk and he also lived in his farm on plot no. 129 or Strandgatan 36. After Carl Emil’s death in 1889, the company C. E. Carlström was taken over by his son Alfred, and Emil Axelin continued in his service.
