Sea captain Johan Gustav Parman and his wife Agatha Elisabeth had four children, daughters Hilda Elisabeth (Betty), Hilma and Anna and son Gustav Adolf. The son moved early to Pori where he married Ellen Sofia Palmroth. The Parman sisters, on the other hand, lived their whole lives in the house which their father had built on Östra Långgatan 63.

Johan Gustav Parman was known as an exceptional captain. He made long and often dangerous journeys across the world’s oceans. Logbook entries are available from China, Australia and Burma. Parman was the master, among other things. on the schooners Öscar af Kristinestad, Iduna and New Orleans.

In 1871, Parman sailed from Livorna with the ship New Orleans. The ship had an expensive marble cargo that was to be transported to New York. New Orleans never arrived at its destination without sinking the entire crew outside Newfounland.
